I see your back-to-school woes.

I see you, parents of the kids without the happy back-to-school photos.

I see you, parents of the kids screaming in terror.

I see you, dotting every “i” and crossing every “t” to ensure they are safe, accommodated, and included in the least restrictive environment.

I see you assuring them they are safe and they are loved.

I see you weeping over your steering wheel.

I see you bravely trusting these people to have your kid’s back.

I see you, parents who simultaneously clap for the accomplishments of your friends’ children and weep over the milestones your child hasn’t met.

I see how you constantly feel these two emotions and struggle to balance them well.

I see how you rejoice over your child’s unique achievements and wish everyone else could see them too.

The balance gets easier; I promise.

Until one day the scale tips and everything goes to heck, because those days will happen.

Somehow, you’ll sleep on it and joy will come in the morning. Your perspective will be renewed, and that scale will balance again. I promise.

I see you. What you feel is normal. You are ok. Your kid is ok.

Just keep dotting every “i” and crossing every “t.”

I long to encourage autism parents and empower all to see inclusivity doesn’t have to be difficult - it can be beautiful. Like what you see?
